Thinking About The Movie Theater Business

Posted: 2005-08-25T17:17:39-05:00

Source:

When the rare movie designed to appeal to baby boomers is released theater owners and movie studios wonder why older movie goers don't come out to the theaters.(Witness the theatrical disappointment of Cinderella Man) They don't have enough customer intuition to see that they have designed their customer experience to be unfriendly to precisely the customers who can most afford the alternatives of DVD collections and home theaters.... The adult theaters will serve adult concessions and beverages, provide shopping opportunities, feature seats and legroom that better accommodate adult dimensions, etc. The Teenager theaters will feature advanced technology, cellphone based interactive elements, teen popular concessions, entertainment, seats, computers, gaming systems, etc. Family theaters will be kid friendly at every turn.

The choices seem to all be the same. For instance, I was so elated last year when the phone company offered me a lower rate. Yes, 29.99..

Brownout

Posted: 2005-09-09T19:33:01Z

Source: Michael Brown is apparently being pushed aside at FEMA in favor of his deputy. There’s more thoughts from James Joyner at OTB, who points out the lack of experimental control here: One presumes Brown has put in incredibly hard hours and done his best here. Clearly, he wasn’t particularly well trained for the position; it’s not knowable whether someone with better credentials could have done any better, though. Nominally, Kathleen Babineaux Blanco has better credentials… let’s go to the tape on her handling of the situation. Shall we say pas bien? And let’s not forget Ray “Underwater Schoolbusses” Nagin either. A pretty shameful showing all-around, methinks. þ: Glenn Reynolds. I really don’t get the Norman Mineta vitriol, though…

Fujitsu has demonstrated flexible color e-paper displays: Unlike conventional paper, however, it can retain an image or a series of images with minimal power consumption, and uses only one-hundredth to one-ten-thousandth of the energy required by conventional display technologies to change a screen image.... At the same time, Romano said that the incorporation of rich media that could be leveraged with Fujitsu's new e-paper will depend on the refresh rate of the e-paper film substrate, which may be too slow, at least at this point, to allow for video or animation.

What I should have had my methods class do

Posted: 2005-09-08T18:16:30Z

Source: A columnist for the Cornell Daily Sun rips on ESPN and brings some statistics to the table: I recorded a normal hour-long SportsCenter and watched it, stopwatch and notepad in hand. I took record of how many of the 60 minutes were spent actually showing highlights. I defined highlights as any game footage, any top plays, any actual sports — no talking, no analyzing, just the visuals. This excludes time well spent on post-game interviews and relevant statistics, and the necessary evil that is the commercial — so I accept that the entire hour will not be used for highlights and highlights alone. The results weren’t pretty… þ: The Road From Bristol, who are now conducting an NIT of non-ESPN personalities that seems to comprise mostly baseball people I’ve never heard of.

LINUX NEWS FROM O'REILLY NETWORK

The Latest from http://www.linuxdevcenter.com and http://ONLamp.com

Why move from Windows NT to SUSE Linux?

Whether you're just investigating the possibilities or already sold and
trying to convince management about the cost savings, faster speed
and improved security, you'll want to read our new paper on migrating
from Windows NT to SUSE Linux.

papers, events, tips and tricks from the company who is getting into
Linux in a very serious way.

=================================================================

Hello, readers. You're in the middle of the Linux newsletter, a weekly
email you subscribed to (we promise!) to hear about the latest free and
open source software use, administration, advocacy, and development.

Here's what's new on ONLamp.com and LinuxDevCenter.com.

As usual, Noel Davis had a fresh batch of Security Alerts. This week,
potential remote vulnerabilities may affect the Frox FTP proxy, MPlayer,
pam_ldap, simpleproxy, phpGroupWare, and webcalendar. Please check with
your vendor for more information and updated packages.

PHP is easy to start and easy to use for very simple tasks, even if you've
never really programmed much before. Simple tasks have a way of growing
into complex tasks, though, and if you've never programmed before, you may
find yourself unsure of how to maintain the small program that has grown
into a huge, complex, sprawling program. A major development in
programming is the idea of design patterns, or similar styles of solutions
to similar problems. The Model-View-Controller pattern works well for
making web applications easier to design, develop, and maintain. Joe
Stump starts a new four-article series on understanding and migrating to
MVC in PHP with "Understanding MVC in PHP":

<http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/php/2005/09/15/mvc_intro.html>

Good system administration is an art--the art of expecting and planning
for routine maintenance to avoid failures and crises. The more data you
have and the more you understand that data, the easier it is to make good
plans. In a previous article, Michael W. Lucas introduced Netflow, a
wonderful piece of software that gives session-level information about
your network. This week, his "Visualizing Network Traffic with Netflow
and FlowScan" shows how to graph and interpret that information visually.
That's the ticket to success.

<http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2005/09/15/Big_Scary_Daemons.html>

If you're a regular reader, you probably know the benefits of open source
software: vendor independence, access to source code apart from any single
vendor or supplier, and an often better development process. How do you
explain that to your parents, children, neighbors, friends, business
partners, managers, and significant others, especially if they don't
really care about the guts of software? The ever-insightful Dan Woods,
author of "Open Source in the Enterprise," has contributed a primer
suitable for all of those classes of people: "What Is Open Source" (Don't
fret, freedom lovers; he explains Free Software too.)

<http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2005/09/15/what-is-opensource.html>

In weblogs this week, Jeremy Jones ponders the job market for snake
handlers:

<http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/7791>

Ming Chow lambasts the price of college textbooks (and thinks SafariU
might help):

Derrick Story drops hints about ORN home page redesigns:

Nitesh Dhanjani switches from a Powerbook to a Dell laptop:

<http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/7803>

Jack Herrington reveals two of his underrecognized technology heroes:

<http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/7818>

Francois Joseph de Kermadec wants better fonts for programming:

<http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/7826>

Jono Bacon encourages the world to expand the potential of
OpenOffice.org:

<http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/7834>

Tom Adelstein challenges analysts who disbelieve Linux's potential on the
desktop:

<http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/7836>

This week's Open Source Project of the Week is AxCrypt, a file encryption
tool for Windows users:

<http://osdir.com/Downloads+index-req-viewdownloaddetails-lid-595-ttitle-AxCrypt.phtml>

That's all for this week. Return with bated breath next week for
potential secrets of GPL v3!

Until then,

The purpose and fundamentals of digital mapping are no different
and no more complex than traditional mapping. Using digital tools,
the computer is the canvas, and software tools do the drawing using
geographic data as the knowledge base. Chapter 2 of Web Mapping
Illustrated explores the common tasks, pitfalls, and issues involved

ONLamp.com and Linux Devcenter Top Five Articles Last Week

1. Ajax on Rails
XMLHttpRequest and Ruby on Rails are two hot topics in web development. As
you ought to expect by now, they work really well together. Curt Hibbs
explains the minimal Ajax you need to know and the minimal Ruby you need
to write to Ajax-ify your Rails applications.

<http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2005/06/09/rails_ajax.html>

2. Understanding MVC in PHP
The most popular "proper" way to build a web application seems to be to
use the Model-View-Controller design pattern. While it sounds complex, the
concepts are sound and the ease of development it provides are compelling.
Joe Stump shows how MVC can work in PHP by walking through working,
example code.

<http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/php/2005/09/15/mvc_intro.html>

3. PHP Form Handling
If your PHP program is a dynamic web page (and it probably is) and your
PHP program is dealing with user input (and it probably is), then you need
to work with HTML forms. David Sklar, author of Learning PHP 5, offers
tips for simplifying, securing, and organizing your form-handling PHP
code.

<http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/php/2004/08/26/PHPformhandling.html>

4. What Is Open Source
Answering the question What is open source? used to be a lot simpler than
it is today. Dan Woods provides some insight by first explaining how open
source software is developed, then delving into how different groups
define the term, and closing with a look at how open source institutions
continue to advance the cause. Dan is coauthor of Open Source for the
Enterprise.

5. Five Habits for Successful Regular Expressions
For many programmers, writing regular expressions is a black art. They
stick to the features they know and hope for the best. Tony Stubblebine,
author of Regular Expression Pocket Reference, says programmers can avoid
a lot of trial and error by adopting these five habits for regular
expression development. The code examples in this article use Perl, PHP,
and Python, but the advice Tony espouses is applicable to nearly any regex
implementation.

At the same time, Romano said that the incorporation of rich media that could be leveraged with Fujitsu's new e-paper will depend on the refresh rate of the e-paper film substrate, which may be too slow, at least at this point, to allow for video or animation.

The second was a ballot initiative to strip the Dade County commission of much of its authority. Little has changed in Miami and the surrounding county in the 13 years since. Politics is still a brutal cycle of race baiting and corruption. But back then, things were really bad. Before I had cast that fateful vote against the county commission, I had read that every single...

The most powerful dramatic device employed by SATC was the development of the show’s four protagonists, who were all modernist, feminist archetypes.
